Meet the Lichens

A series of short (~10 minute) videos introducing common lichens, how to identify them by sight in the field, and look-a-likes (look-a-lichens!). This video series was first created as part of my Lichens of the Bay Area course in spring 2020, when I had to quickly figure out how to help newbies begin to recognize lichens without a field trip. I recommend watching the lichen anatomy lectures first, since some common anatomical terms (e.g. upper cortex, apothecia, soredia) are used.

NOTE: I use the names for lichens that most amateurs and lichenologists use today, and that you will most likely to be able to find in books and other resources. However, lichen taxonomy and names are frequently being updated, so in some cases the name I use in these videos may not be the most up-to-date by some sources. But name and taxonomy changes can take a while to catch on, or may be debated, so I haven’t rushed to immediately change names. In some cases I may mention other names that may be used for these genera.

Introduction to Lichens

These lectures provide the core of my Lichens of the Bay Area class, covering the biology, ecology, and human relationships with lichens. For now, I have made just one available (a two-part anatomy lecture) while I edit the others so that they are suitable for listing publicly online. If you would like access to the unlisted playlist, please use the contact form to contact me, tell me briefly why you are interested, and I will share the link.

Intro to Lichen Anatomy

Learn the structures and features of lichens in order to start identifying and recognizing common lichens. Part 1 covers generalized lichen internal and external anatomy and the major growth forms (part 2 covers reproductive structures and additional external structures). Note: Most of these slides were originally created by Dr. Lalita Calabria and Dr. Jesse Miller…
